October:  If You Can't Sleep, Count Sheep - for 2-5 year olds

Teacher Tip

If you’re using this song with a group of children in a classroom: sit the children in a circle and go over the song together first. Teach them the words and actions. Then, pass a toy sheep around the circle as each number changes.

If you have a stretchy band, let the children hold it while sitting in a circle. Gradually pull the band out until it’s taut, and then let it go at the end of your counting sequence. See the video for more details and ideas!

Try This Song: Learning Numbers 1–20 - a playful and musical way to learn English numbers together with your child!

 How to Use It
1. Find a special time of day
Pick a calm and happy moment with your child — before bedtime, during bath time, or in the car on the way to school.

2. Use a sheep prop (if you have one!)
If you have a sheep costume or a cuddly sheep toy, use it as a fun prop while you sing.

3. Play the song and sing together
Put on the music and sing along! Follow the hand movements shown in my video to make it more interactive.

4. Pass the sheep or count on your fingers
If you have a soft sheep toy, take turns passing it back and forth as you sing the numbers.
If not, just count along on your fingers.

5. Count toy sheep or real objects
If you have toy sheep, let your child count them and place them in a jar or basket.
This helps make the numbers real and hands-on.

6. Go at your own pace
Once you know the song, try singing it yourself — more slowly if your child needs time.
Start with numbers 1 to 10, and when they’re ready, move up to 1 to 20.

Extra Tip: Try to make this part of your daily routine — even just a few minutes a day! Regular singing strengthens your bond and helps your child learn in a fun, natural way.
